The man who accused Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash of underage sexual conduct has recanted, according to the New York Times. The man's lawyer now says it was "adult consensual relationship," as Clash had contended.
In a statement, Clash said, "I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest. I will not discuss it further."
The puppeteer had taken a leave of absence from Sesame Street to fight the allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy. Earlier, the Sesame Workshop said in a statement that its own inquiry -- including interviews with the now 23-year-old accuser -- concluded that claims of underage sexual conduct against Clash were unsubstantiated.
The accuser has remained anonymous. His recantation did not include an apology to Clash.
